In Rio, everyone has a cell phone. If you want to keep in contact with your travelling companions or friends in the city, it's by far the best way to go.

If you have an unlocked GSM cell phone, you can buy a local chip to get you up and running on one of the local networks. It's about R$20 reals for a chip, and then you just pay for any phone calls you make. Incoming calls are free inside the local coverage area. Rates on outgoing calls vary greatly depending on which carrier you're calling, but you can figure at least a real a minute on average.

If you don't have a cell phone you can use, you can rent one. It's R$10 reals per day, and we require a refundable $50 US deposit. You can pick up the phone here in our store, or if we're giving you a ride in from the airport, we can have the phone with us when we meet you. Just send us an email before you arrive so we can make sure we have a phone on hand. All of our phones are also enabled for international calls.
